Investing in our workforce

Lonrho Logistics complies with national labor laws, national and local legislation’s, by-laws and food safety certifications.

We are continuously working towards:

  • Making all our sites safe work environments
  • Participating in skills development programs
  • Train our staff in health, safety and environmental awareness programs
  • Train our staff on industry specific and job related courses to enhance their skills

Train our staff in national and internationally recognized qualification programs to enhance their work skills, experience and expertise, such as:

  • Airline cargo courses 1 to 4
  • IATA – Category 1-12 dangerous goods regulations
  • IATA – Cargo Introductory Diploma courses
  • IATA – Live Animal Regulations.
  • SA Civil Aviation Authority – Aviation Security Manager Level 3 – Cargo
  • SA Civil Aviation Authority – Aviation Security Awareness – Cargo
  • South African Revenue Services – Customs affairs and procedures
  • Assist permanent staff members with funding for degree or diploma courses according to field of expertise in Logistics and Cold Chain Management
  • Learner Ship Program
  • First Aid, Firefighting, Accident Investigations and Forklift Operations

Supporting Communities

Lonrho Logistics support various schools, charity organizations and local community by:

  • Regular donations to registered NPO’s, NGO’s, Children’s Homes, Hospice, Animal welfare, schools and various other organizations
  • Helping and allocating time and knowledge to college and university students with project papers and other assignments pertaining to our field of expertise

Our staff social committee, who are responsible for social functions between staff, clients and service providers also organizes various projects for the underprivileged on a regular basis. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Annual Easter egg drive for underprivileged children
  • Annual Bandana Day in support of the Sunflower Fund  All funds raised is going towards the South African bone marrow registry
  • Shoe-box projects at Christmas time
  • Regular winter blanket and clothing projects


  • Complying with and communicating Lonrho and Lonrho Logistics policies, including but not limited to anti bribery and corruption (ABC) to all Lonrho Logistics staff members
  • Adhere to all government legislation’s, legal requirements, metropolitan and local municipal by-laws with help and support from our Occupational, Health, Safety and Environmental consultant.
  • We have implemented our own Management System and other programme’s to keep us up to date with any changes to legal requirements.

Strengthening the local economy

Lonrho Logistics provide freight forwarding solutions for one of South Africa’s largest export commodities; various perishable products, whether it be fresh, frozen, on ice or dry. Lonrho Logistics also handles general (dry cargo) by air, sea, road imports, exports or domestic, thus providing employment for approximately 211 staff members at 7 branches supporting approximately 844 dependents. This helps farmers, fisheries and our clients to get their produce to market efficiently to maximize their ability to respond to changing consumer demands

Protecting the environment

Lonrho Logistic’s Environmental Management System (EMS) is based on ISO14001:2015 standards and implemented at our Johannesburg and Cape Town sites and is audited annually to encourage improvements on our Environmental Management.

We are also working toward:

  • Continuously looking at better ways to reduce waste with proper waste management programs and promote recycling
  • We also aim to reduce carbon emissions by having all vehicles on maintenance service programs as well as serviced regularly to comply with legal carbon emission thresholds
  • All cold rooms are covered by an maintenance programs to prevent the release of refrigeration gasses into the atmosphere and is audited annually by PPECB
  • Ongoing long term project to convert all ageing cold room infrastructures from environmentally dangerous refrigeration gas to more environmentally friendly refrigeration gas
  • Ongoing long term project to replace all fluorescent lights and tubes with LED lighting
  • Investing in new generation, state of the art, environmentally friendly, refrigeration cooling towers and monitoring equipment, thus reducing gas and electricity usage
  • All Lonrho Logistics buildings at all our branches are smoke free zones
  • Asbestos maintenance program for our warehouse at George branch (Maintained by ACSA)

Our Environmental Management System calls for Johannesburg and Cape Town branches to report on a weekly and monthly basis regarding usage of:

  • Fuel (diesel, petrol and oil)
  • Water and Electricity
  • Gas usage (refrigeration, forklift’s)
  • Waste (hazardous, non-hazardous, medical, e-waste & recycling materials)
  • Tire’s and fluorescent tubing
  • Accidents and Incidents (HSE) – weekly
  • Operational data (Tonnages)
  • Work hours (man and machinery)

This is to monitor and to continuously make staff aware to reduce usage of and preserve our natural resources.
